Yet, this is not necessarily so. A flawless dashboard reinforces the harmonious, neat overall impression that you always want from your car.<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>A well-maintained car can have hundreds of thousands of miles on the clock and still look good. <strong>Therefore:<\/strong><em> although a cracked dashboard can be a repair challenge, <strong>it might turn out to be worth your while<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Why are there cracks in the dashboard?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autopartspro.co.uk\/tips-advice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/1-4.jpg\" alt=\"Why are there cracks in the dashboard\" \/><em><strong>The dashboard panel is situated right beneath <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autopartspro.co.uk\/tips-advice\/damaged-windscreen-879\">the windscreen<\/a><\/strong><\/em> and permanently exposed to the glare of the sun, causing<em> the chloride in the PVC of the vinyl trim<\/em> to gradually evaporate. The paneling becomes brittle, hard and is no longer capable of flexibly expanding or contracting.<\/p>\n<p><strong><em>On spots where tensions are strongest, i.e. at oblong gaps or other cavities, the first cracks occur<\/em><\/strong>. If these are not immediately seen, the cracks are likely to expand over the entire instrument panel.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Also<\/strong>, the underneath foam absorbs <em>the moisture in the air causing it to swell<\/em>. This is what causes the typical cracks with their billowing edges often seen on dashboards of older cars. <strong><em>A completely cracked dashboard can only be salvaged by complete disassembly<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>That is:<\/strong> <em>take action at the slightest crack. This is the basis for a step-by-step filling repair of the cracked dashboard.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong>The crack must be thoroughly cleaned<\/strong><\/em>. Afterward, the entire repair spot should be rubbed with <em>isopropyl alcohol<\/em>, causing a grease-free surface enabling the thermoplastic resin to adhere. It is heated with <em>a soldering iron<\/em> and pressed onto the resin bar. When the resin completely fills the crack, the basis is laid out for a successful repair.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong>Upon filling<\/strong><\/em>, the crack is sanded. The filled spot must be approximately <em>2 \u2013 5 mm in depth<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Subsequently<\/strong>, the sanded area is thoroughly cleaned again.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autopartspro.co.uk\/tips-advice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/7-4.jpg\" alt=\"sand the dashboard\" \/><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Now<\/strong>, the repair filler is applied. The filler consists of <em>the filling mass in the matching colour and a hardener<\/em>. Both components are mixed in the prescribed ratio and applied to the repair spot. <em><strong>The filled spot may be smooth. <\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong>Before the filling mass is hardened out<\/strong><\/em>, the structured paper is pressed onto it, applying structure to the repair spot and making it practically invisible &#8211; exactly what you wish to effect.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This small trick has a great impact on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.autopartspro.co.uk\/tips-advice\/car-interior-tips-68\">the car interior<\/a>. If there is one installed in the car, you absolutely need to have the repair manual for this type ready to avoid making mistakes when removing the dashboard.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autopartspro.co.uk\/tips-advice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/10-2.jpg\" alt=\"dashboard spot repair\" \/><em><strong>When the dashboard is removed<\/strong><\/em>, it comes down to more than just spot repair. <em>Sanding, widening and filling the crack is done in the same way as the small repair<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nevertheless<\/strong>, <em>after sanding the filler mass, you are done with spot repair<\/em>. <strong>Now<\/strong> the entire dashboard must be painted professionally and in several layers. The accessory trade offers very adequate <em>structured paint<\/em>, perfectly <em>imitating the vinyl structure<\/em>.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Why not re-trim?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autopartspro.co.uk\/tips-advice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/11-1.jpg\" alt=\"the renewal of the vinyl trimming on a cracked instrument panel\" \/><em><strong>Practically, the renewal of the vinyl trimming on a cracked instrument panel is no suitable option <\/strong><\/em>due to the production process of these parts.<em> Dashboards are trimmed on a vacuum forming mold with the help of shaping tools<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Without these tools, a DIY&#8217;er has to rely on alternatives<\/strong><\/em>. Attempting to glue a new cover onto the instrument panel is a recipe for failure.<\/p>\n<h3 style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>Making the most of the occasion<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.autopartspro.co.uk\/tips-advice\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/03\/12-1.jpg\" alt=\"Restore car dashboard\" \/><em><strong>Dashboard disassembly is a hell of a job \u2013 and therefore an appropriate occasion for executing all useful preventive repair.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>An example of useful preventive repair<\/strong> is<a href=\"https:\/\/www.autopartspro.co.uk\/tips-advice\/diy-light-bulbs-replacement-1816\"> the replacement of all lamps<\/a> with effective and reliable LEDs.
