The company’s history started in 1882, when Enrico Piaggio, a sawmill owner, bought a land in Sestri Ponente to establish a woodworking enterprise. In 1884 his son, Rinaldo Piaggio, joined him; he engaged in manufacturing of ship equipment. Later, the company worked in railroad and aviation areas, and in 1946 it presented its first motorbike – Vespa.
Piaggio company developed the first hybrid scooter. It is a 2009 MP3 Hybrid, a 3-wheeled model which has both an electric power unit outputting 3.5 hp and a 14 hp petrol engine.
The company is one of the first manufacturers in the world to offer cargo vehicles with electric power units – Porter Electric models.
