A long time ago, electric window regulators in the car were something special. Nowadays, even cheap small cars are equipped with these practical features. In the end, it is a lot more comfortable as well as safer. Just a push on the button will open or close the window. The usual cranks were just a nuisance, cumbersome and causing distraction. Still, cranks were a lot more reliable. Their reliability is a weak point of electric window regulator. Construction of a window switch The power window regulator consists of a switch, either placed in the central console or on the hand rest of the side door. Several constructions are possible for its functioning:
- - Rocker switch
- Pull / tumbler switch
- Setting switch
Pull / tumbler switches open the window by being pressed and close it by being pulled. This requires a special form of switch for it to function reliably.
A setting switch is operated by sliding the switching unit for- or backwards. This opens and closes the window. This switch could often be found in American cars, but meanwhile has become rare. In luxury cars, the window regulator switch has internal lighting. This makes it easier to find in the dark. Similar principle A switch interrupts a circuit. This is its task, irrespective of its shape. In the electric window regulator, the switch operates a 12 V electric motor integrated in the car door. The position of the switch causes the motor to rotate the mechanism forward or backward. Defects of the window switch A window switch is a small, complex, electronic part, consisting of a plastic housing, electric contacts, circuit board, the handle and a return spring. Depending on age and use, several components might fail. The buttons can corrode, the house and the handle holder can break, the spring can lose tension or rupture. Furthermore, the circuit board can become soiled and corroded. A defective electric window regulator switch is a nuisance, though easy to repair. Replacing the window switch Replacing a window switch is fortunately very simple. Generally, the component is installed either in the middle console between the seats or alternatively in the side doors. It can be easily levered with a flat, broad screwdriver. The integrated safety stop can easily be bypassed. The wiring is sufficiently long to allow the switch to be pulled out of the window regulator. The cable shoe is to be pulled off and the part replaced by a new one. An attempt at repair of a defective switch is nowadays hardly worthwhile. The components are welded together making disassembly impossible. Only the contact points on the cable shoe can be checked for corrosion. However, this occurs relatively seldom in this location. Quality for extended comfort of use A defective window regulator switch is a real inconvenience. Not until the component fails, you notice how often the window is opened during driving. Especially for these simple electronic parts, plenty of cheap suppliers are on the market, offering products of dubious quality. You could ask yourself: what life span do you expect for a window regulator switch costing less than 5 euro? Choosing for OEM-quality is worthwhile here. Only this re-establishes the comfortable touch and reliability the car had at time of its production. In our shop we exclusively rely on brand quality, to ensure a continuous function of the window regulator.
