For decennia, the window crank was standard equipment for ventilation and climate control in cars. Even until in the first generation C-class Mercedes this simple but very reliable car part was used. Nowadays manual window cranks are only standard in very cheap cars, such as LADA or DACIA. Window crank function The window crank is a purely manual mechanism for opening the side windows of a car. The window crank consists of the crank itself, a toothed cog and a cable mechanism. This is connected to the side window. Depending on the turning direction of the crank, the window comes up or down. Installation of a window crank The window crank can easily be installed in all cars. It consists of a die cast aluminium handle with a rotating head. With a central bolt it is mounted on the toothed cog. The central bolt often has a plastic cover. Depending on the interior decoration, this plastic cover may contain the whole handle or just cover parts of it. The cover can be removed manually or levered with help of a flat screwdriver. Upon removal of the cover the central bolt is accessible. This can often be loosened manually. As soon as the bolt is loosened, the handle can be pulled free. In another version, the bolt is restrained by a fixing ring. This can be moved manually for the handle to be removed. Both versions enable the handle to be mounted in a desired position. Nevertheless we recommend mounting the handle with window shut in a two o'clock position, making it easy to grab the handle to open the window and the turning knob will not press against the passenger's leg. Typical window crank defects In most cases, a window crank defect is the result of a jammed movement mechanism. A lengthy and forceful attempt to open or close the window might cause the handle to break off. In case of a jammed movement mechanism, the cause should be removed for the mechanism not sustaining any further damage. Cause for a jamming mechanism often lies in loss of graphite lubrication. This is easy to fix. The mechanic has to be made accessible by removing the door trim. Removing the handle is the first step. A window crank is subject to wear by years of use. Those who buy a vintage car with emotional value generally appreciate a clean and orderly interior. The replacement of worn window cranks considerably improves the look of a car. More seldom is freewheeling of the cog or its breaking off. This can happen if the handle has never been screwed on but put on at the moment of use. The cog toothing gradually wears down and the handle no longer transmits rotation. Quality is important A window crank is made of die cast aluminium. Not only do high-grade car parts have sturdier elements. Often, they are considerably more attractive to the eye. Window cranks are very cheap parts, hardly ever costing more than 15 euro (£13). All articles in our shop are OEM-quality parts. Convert to electric? A conversion to electric window regulators sounds good in theory. However, this conversion is a lot of work. Generally, the entire mechanism must be removed and replaced by the electric version. Especially the connection to the car wiring is reserved for professionals who are familiar with this system. New parts even make it more expensive. In addition to the motor and the lifting mechanism the door lining and the console need to be replaced. This can amount to several hundreds of pounds. You have to ask yourself if this is really worthwhile: a vintage car would lose considerable value with this conversion due to its loss of originality. In a cheap second-hand car, the use of second-hand spare parts makes more sense as well. These can be successively replaced by new parts. Our shop offers everything necessary.
