Your Temperature sensor worn out? » Read more about common malfunctions • Repair • Replacement manual
The temperature sensor monitors the temperature of the cooling agent and at the same time the temperature of the car engine. In doing so, the sensor does not only play an essential part in the safety of the motor, but also in its general performance. On the basis of the temperature the correct fuel mix is being determined, which in case of a malfunctioning temperature sensor can lead to the mixture being too rich, causing problems.
How does a temperature sensor work?
The sensor is a passive element, functioning on basis of the voltage of an ECU. By a change in the resistance, the temperature of the cooling agent and the engine can be calculated with the negative temperature coefficient. As the temperature rises, the resistance value of the sensor decreases.
How a defective sensor can be detected?
It is difficult to detect malfunctions of the sensor itself. Mainly its effect on the engine can be noticed, as it cannot function optimally with wrong values. A defective temperature sensor can be compensated only to a certain extent by the lambda sensor, which also monitors and regulates the air-fuel mix. A penetrating and persistent fuel smell is a clear indication, as well as difficulties of starting engine in cold weather
How often should a temperature sensor be replaced?
Generally, these sensors are built to last a car's life span and can function for years without any problem. Malfunctions, however, can occur in any car part. Fortunately the replacement is not particularly difficult or too much work. Therefore this repair can be carried out quickly. It is however important to heed the signs and on occasion of any warning sign to replace the defective sensor without delay. Should this be neglected, the engine, on account of faulty settings and a continuous supply of a wrong fuel mixture can become too greasy and get damaged.
