Intuitive vehicle controls thanks to steering column switches A steering column switch is a multifunctional input assistant for various signal and comfort features in a car. It was developed for reasons of efficient production and intuitive usability. The largely standardized functions of the steering column switch make it easy for a driver to switch from one vehicle to another. A vehicle can have one or more steering column switches. Technology of the steering column switch The typical functionality of the steering column switch is:

-Turn signal lever -Windshield wiper -Headlight -Light regulation

In addition, the following functions are also often controlled by steering column switches:

-Cruise control -Horn -Car radio controls

The actions of the steering column lever usually triggered by flipping it up or down, tapping, pulling, pressing or rotating around its own axis. A distinction is made between tap and switch actions. The tap actions, for example, horn, windshield washer, rear window washing or flasher, are only active for as long as they are being manually triggered on the steering column switch. When released, the switch returns to its rest position and the action is stopped. Switching actions, however, noticeably lock into place and remain active until the driver ends the action. These include the wipers and the driving lights. Comfort switch windshield wiper Many modern vehicles have a very convenient function for the windshield washer on the steering column switch. For decades, windshield wipers were preset to interval-normal-fast. However, the interval function wasn't always suitable for the weather. Either it was still too fast, causing the wipers to squeak uncomfortably. Or they were too slow, thus allowing for the field of view to be blocked by too much rain or snow until the next interval. For almost 20 years, an additional grading of the interval wiper function has established itself. With up to seven additional speeds, the interval wiper function can be adjusted to the prevailing weather conditions very precisely. This function is also triggered by a small, additional ring immediately behind the wipe-wash function of the steering column switch. Position of the steering column switch The steering column switch(es) are located on the steering column, directly behind the steering wheel. The steering column switch is positioned in such a way, that it can be reached by stretching out index finger and middle finger. Thus, the driver can trigger many tapping and switching functions without taking his hands off the steering wheel. Only functions in which the steering column switch must be rotated around its own axis require taking a hand off of the steering wheel. These are usually the windshield-wiper system and lighting controls. Steering column switch defects A steering column switch is an important component for safe operation of the vehicle. Usually, it survives a car's life, though it may be prematurely damaged by adverse circumstances. The steering column switch is a multifunctional device with electronic and mechanical components. These can wear out, corrode, break off or bend. Corrosion of the switching and sliding contacts is particularly common in convertibles, for the electrical system receives more exposure to the weather than in vehicles with a closed cabin. Steering column switches are designed for gentle and soft operation. Constant "forceful" operation can cause the snap switches to wear out. This will first result in too much sensitivity, until the steering column switch can no longer be brought into a clear position. Steering column switch repair The challenge in repairing a steering column switch lies in its removal. In earlier years, this was quite easy. However, since steering wheels are now by default equipped with airbags, steering column switch repairs have become more difficult. Removing a steering wheel with an airbag requires high skills, otherwise there is a risk of unintentionally triggering it, which can result in life-threatening situations. Broken, cracked or otherwise worn steering column switches can usually not be repaired, but must be replaced. Purchasing steering column switches as spare parts Steering column switches are highly specific components that only fit a certain type of vehicle within a brand. This strongly restricts the number of manufacturers of this component. Nonetheless, there are differences in quality. Therefore, care should be taken when it comes to this important, multifunctional component. Only providers of new steering column switches certified by the vehicle manufacturer are recommended.
