Protect the air-conditioner with the climate sensor
The climate sensor is part of the air conditioning. It is there to protect the air conditioner from overpressure. The component is inexpensive and easy to replace. The sensor is very important for safe and trouble-free operation of the air conditioner. Pressure switch or pressure switch are another name for the air sensor. Air conditioner in a car features three pressure switches.
Air conditioner function
In an air conditioner, a cooling gas is initially compressed by means of a mechanical compressor. The internal pressure in this part of the system can reach up to 33 bars, an extremely high value. An expansion valve then ensures the controlled release and expansion of the compressed gas. The subsequent condensation then results in the desired cooling effect. The now cooled off gas is passed through a heat exchanger, which is perfused with air from a fan. This airflow is directed to the car's interior to achieve the cooling effect of the air conditioner. The air conditioner is controlled by a slip clutch at the compressor. This is driven by the engine via a belt drive. Once the desired cooling capacity is reached, the electronically controlled clutch switches off the compressor. Would it not do this, the pressure in the air conditioner would continuously keep increasing until it bursts. Pressure switches serve to prevent this, and to make the air conditioner's control as sensitive and efficient as possible.
The climate sensors in the cooling system
An air conditioner features three pressure switches: The low pressure switch, high pressure switch and the trinary switch.
The low pressure switch turns the compressor off if the pressure is too low. This can happen when the air conditioning was switched off for a long time. A compressor running at too low pressure can take damage due to missing internal lubrication. Therefore, the cooling system is completely switched off as a result of longer periods of non-use.
The high pressure switch stops the compressor when a maximum pressure is reached. It disconnects the power supply from the electronically controlled slip clutch and allows the climate system to continue running without the compressor until the pressure returns to an acceptable level.
The trinary switch regulates the airflow from the fan at the air conditioning condenser. This optimizes the condensation of the refrigerant.
Climate sensor defects
If the climate sensors are defective, the air conditioner's cooling capacity is affected. The cooling capacity significantly decreases or fails completely. Another indication is constant and switching on and off of the compressor clutch. However, the air conditioner is equipped with additional safety features. A defective climate sensor is unlikely to result in massive damage.
Defects in the pressure switches can result from dirt in the air ducts. The housing may take damage as a result of vibration. Usually, a failed pressure switch is a result of corroded contacts. Lots of moisture collects on air conditioners, which can also penetrate into the switch. When cleaning the contacts, one should also polish the plug contacts on the cable. A contact spray reliably prevents subsequent corrosion in the long run. Repairing climate sensors With exception of cleaning corroded contacts, there is no way of repairing a climate sensor. However, replacement of this inexpensive spare part is quite easy. Even averagely gifted hobby mechanics are able to replace the air sensor by themselves. This task does not require opening the cooling circuit. Quality of pressure switches A defective pressure switch is more than a mere inconvenience. A malfunctioning air conditioner also unnecessarily consumes fuel. Therefore, you should not postpone repairing an air conditioner. Even in winter, air conditioning is useful, because it is very efficient in removing moisture from the interior and prevents the glass from freezing on the inside. Selection of high-quality spare parts ensures necessary safety and permanent functioning of the air conditioner. From a technical standpoint, pressure switches are relatively simple components offered by numerous providers. However, only a brand products guarantee permanent functioning. Thus, the slightly higher price for genuine spare parts is worth it.
