Reservoir for the lubrication: the oil pan (sump)
The oil pan sits at the bottom of the engine. Its task is supplying the engine with oil. It is a reliable and durable component, in normal cases lasting a car's entire life span. Nevertheless as a result of its proximity to the road, it runs the risk of becoming damaged when the car bottoms out. A drive on a bumpy terrain can therefore end in a defective oil carter.
Oil pan components
An oil sump consists of the following components:
- drain plug with magnet
The oil pan is either made of solid steel or aluminium. Steel is more resistant to stone chipping, but has the tendency to rust. Aluminium is considerably softer, but doesn't rust. A hard collision causes a permanent dent in an aluminium oil pan. As long as the oil pan is tight, no action is required. The MOT generally overlooks a dented oil pan. Oil sumps in off-road vehicles and low cars are especially at risk.
Replacing an oil pan
There are several reasons for removing an oil pan. The gasket tends to become leaky after 150.000 km. On this occasion it isn't necessary to replace the entire oil pan. It must nevertheless be removed to reach the con-rod bearings. There are three main reasons for replacing an oil pan:
- Mechanic damage through collisions and bottoming out
- Strong deformation as a result of an overheated engine
Replacing the oil pan is not very difficult. Possibly other components such as shaft spiders or exhaust pipes must be removed first. When the oil pan lies free, it just needs to be unscrewed, enabling the oil pan to be pulled out downwards. Evidently the oil is drained first. Wait until the engine has cooled. Errors often occur when installing a new oil pan. Just like the cylinder head and valve cover, oil carters cannot be screwed tight just like that. Crosswise and stepwise tightening guarantees a tight fit of the oil pan to the engine, placing it straight on the engine block without deformation. Furthermore it is important to tighten the oil pan with the right torque. Many gaskets are damaged by applying too much force when tightening the bolts. You can spare yourself the annoyance by looking in the repair manual first.
Quality lasts longer
If an oil pan makes itself noticed through a defect, expensive further damage can often not be avoided. A leaking oil pan means considerable loss of oil, which is potentially dangerous for the engine. Furthermore, leaking oil is extremely harmful to the environment. If the police notice a leaking engine, a heavy fine is often the result. Therefore do not economise on this inconspicuous component. Some unknown manufacturers offer extremely cheap oil pans. As a rule, these do not offer a tight fit nor the required material strength actually required for this component. Therefore, trust the branded articles in our shop.
