Precise combustion with the high-pressure pump On modern vehicles, the high-pressure pump is the central control element for efficient engine run. It has completely replaced the formerly used downdraft carburetors. Today it offers maximum performance with minimum fuel consumption. The precise controllability of the high-pressure pump is particularly important for efficient cleaning of exhaust gases. Strict emissions regulations cannot be adhered to without these components. The common name of the high-pressure pump is "injection pump". Expensive yet durable The injection pump is a very high-quality spare part. Prior to its introduction in gasoline vehicles, it was used in diesel vehicles for decades. Early injection pumps, with their valves, cylinders and pistons, almost resembled a small combustion engine. Their mode of action is also similar. Today, most injection pumps are radially operating pumps. This design principle involves considerably fewer moving parts, which affects durability. The injection pump is driven by a toothed belt. The fuel conveyed from the tank by the fuel pump is drawn with low pressure and sprayed into the combustion chamber at high pressure by a nozzle. The moving parts, which must reliably function at any temperature, make the injection pump a very expensive spare part. With just a few exceptions, the lifetime of a high-pressure pump is approximately 150,000 km or more. High-pressure pump defects A high-pressure pump's weak points are the bearings and the seals. Gaskets are especially susceptible in diesel vehicles, which are permanently operated using bio-fuel. Thus, before one decides to refuel a car using bio-diesel, it is important to first ensure whether the manufacturer allows it. A missing diesel or fuel filter can also cause an injection pump to fail prematurely. In modern vehicles, injection pump defects are usually indicated by the control unit. Other indications are poor throttle response, rough running engine, poor starting performance, noise, leaks or a high fuel consumption. An exact fault description can be retrieved by reading out the control unit's error register. High-pressure pump repair Repairing a high-pressure pump is very challenging. If the control unit has already indicated an error, a repair is usually no longer possible without special tools. Sealing sets for repairing injection pumps are available on the market. Although resealing a leaky fuel injection pump is a real challenge for savvy car tinkerers, it's absolutely doable. Yet, when it comes to repairing an injection pumps' bearings, electronic components or valves, hobby mechanics quickly reach their limits. Oftentimes, the sealing surfaces must be ground and polished when repairing defective injection pumps. Furthermore, an overhaul also involves using special tools to grind the impeller pump's tread located inside the component. These special tools are typically only found in specialist workshops. Thus, in most cases, there is no around purchasing a new injection pump. Used or replacement? Naturally, the idea of installing a used injection pump for 400 euros instead of a new one costing 1200 euro is very tempting. The problem is that nobody can guarantee the remaining service life of a used fuel injection pump. Another option is having a specialist refurbish the pump. This is similarly expensive, but brings with it a certain amount of guarantee. The advantage of fixing an injection pump is that the existing control unit doesn't need to be reprogrammed. However, true safety can only be achieved by opting for a new injection pump. Fortunately, mounting and dismounting is quite simple. A skilled hobby mechanic can perform the replacement of high-pressure pump within 2-3 hours. Now, the existing control unit must merely be tuned for the new fuel injection pump. Quality is crucial Think twice before purchasing a cheap replacement. While there are many areas in a car, where one can choose a no-name manufacturer, this is not the case when it comes to the injection pump. Top-quality is key! Fortunately, there are not too many manufacturers of these highly specific components. There is no alternative to trusting a brand name when replacing a high-pressure pump. Despite the high price of this spare part, reliable dealers can often make very interesting offers.
