In the construction facility, fuel tank caps are connected to the bodywork with a string, bracket or chain. If sooner or later this connection breaks it can happen very quickly: when filling the car, the fuel tank cap is placed on the car roof or the petrol pump – and forgotten. This isn't dramatic, nevertheless a nuisance. For this reason every petrol station has universal fuel tank caps. The original part is still the better solution, for otherwise important functions could get lost. Central locking safely seals What many people don't know: central locking also locks the fuel tank cap in order to prevent fuel theft. Actually, the fuel tank cap is not absolutely necessary. In the filling pipe of the tank is an extra valve closing the pipe at the bottom side. Together with the lockable external lid, the tank is sufficiently shut. Nevertheless the fuel tank cap is mandatorily prescribed and should be replaced as soon as possible: the internal valve may prevent the intrusion of particles, it cannot completely prevent the escape of petrol vapours. Therefore a lacking fuel tank cap constitutes a risk of explosion. Outsmarting the lid Fuel tank caps with an external lid which can be closed with the central locking have one disadvantage: they can freeze in winter. This causes a small pin to freeze as well, which extends when locked, keeping the lid shut. In addition, a car with a sealable lid has a small manual release. In the car's interior close to the tank lid a small pulling cable is situated. A cover often must be removed to reach the cable. A strong pull of the cable unlocks the fuel lid and the tank is accessible again. Refrain from makeshift solutions A universal fuel tank cap is permitted and better than no cap at all. Makeshift solutions such as rags or plastic bags inserted in the pipe should be omitted. For short distances the combination of internal and external lid is sufficient. A replacement should be provided at the next petrol station. Rags absorb petrol, transforming the car into a moving fire bomb. Plastic bags can dissolve in the petrol and clog the pipe. Plastic residue could block the fuel level sensor or cause malfunctions of the fuel hose or filter. Original is always ideal The cheap universal fuel tank caps are an emergency solution. They seal the tank completely and ensure complete safety. However, they do not have an overpressure protection and cannot be locked. High-grade fuel tank caps are equipped with a venting function automatically regulating excess pressure or negative pressure. In addition, the original or certified fuel tank caps are available in a lockable version making it impossible for fuel thieves to reach your precious fuel.
