The fuel pressure regulator is a simple mechanical component, responsible for the fuel supply. The pressure regulator keeps the internal pressure in the fuel hoses at a constant level, contributing to a smooth running of the engine and low fuel consumption. Mechanical and reliable The functioning of a mechanical pressure regulator is simple: the flow of fuel is conducted via a membrane with a spring connection. The normal internal pressure maintains the spring at the ideal position. If pressure falls, the membrane closes, enhancing the pressure. If the pressure rises, the spring causes the membrane to open, thus compensating the pressure. This very simple construction convinces by its durability and reliability. Still, this component is subject to considerable mechanical strain, and has its natural wear limits. Electronic and efficient In modern cars the pressure regulator is controlled by a control unit and equipped with a wire connection. Instead of a return spring the pressure regulator is operated by a magnetic valve. This is more precise, reliable and fuel-efficient. Therefore, electro-mechanical pressure regulators are somewhat more expensive than the traditional, purely mechanical parts. Electronic pressure regulators are mainly found in diesel cars. Position and operation of the pressure regulator The pressure regulator can be found in the engine block close to the injection. Its exact location varies depending on vehicle, model and series. To find it, follow the fuel hose starting at the tank. The pressure regulator is easy to spot: it is a small, circular box, a fuel hose leading into it and another one out of it. There are pressure regulators with just one connection by a T-piece to the fuel hose. The regulator is connected to the engine block or the bodywork by a bracket, a snap ring or a simple bolt. Fuel pressure regulator defects The pressure regulator is a spring-connected membrane in a die-cast aluminium housing, through which runs fuel. Typical pressure regulator defects are:

    - ruptures in the membrane - broken spring - leakages in the housing - clogging by polluted fuel
As a rule, only a damage gasket or pollution are eligible for repair. If the regulator is polluted due to a damaged fuel filter or other influences, it can lead to clogging. It is possible to disassemble the regulator and clean it with a brake cleaner to make it functional again. Very often, the particles causing a malfunction cannot be removed. Fortunately, replacing a defective pressure regulator is very simple. It is important for diesel pressure regulators to vent the fuel hose. Fuel pressure regulator versions In addition to the mechanical and electronic pressure regulators, the accessory trade offers other versions of this component, such as:
    - configurable fuel pressure regulators - configurable pressure regulators with integrated pressure gauge
Both versions are mainly important for racing, but also are popular in the tuning scene as only a fine-tuned engine promises an impeccable performance. The configurable pressure regulators with integrated pressure gauge are especially convenient, as the IST pressure can be read permanently and checked during adjustment. For standard repairs these versions are not required. Costs of a new fuel pressure gauge The cheapest versions start at 10 euro (£8). Depending on car model and the component's quality the price can be over 50 euro (£ 43). The fuel pressure regulator consists of several delicate mechanical components, their production requiring plenty of experience. Therefore we always recommend the use of original parts. Especially for such delicate and at the same time very important car parts such as the fuel pressure regulator, inferior quality will very soon betray itself most inconveniently. The car will not be able to deploy its full performance despite the new component, its unsteady engine run causing persistent problems. Buying a fuel pressure regulator at autopartspro.co.uk At autopartspro you will always find original spare parts at an attractive price. Wholesale purchase enables us to calculate especially low prices. We are happy to pass this price advantage on to our customers. Therefore, you can obtain a quality pressure regulator by BOSCH, PIERBURG or ATE at ca. 10 euro (£8), making an attempt at repair of your defective fuel pressure regulator definitely not worthwhile.
