The flex pipe is a small but very important component of the exhaust, absorbing the vibrations coming from the hanging exhaust pipe as well those transmitted by the engine on the manifold and the Y-pipe. The flex pipe is a cheap part and very simple to replace. The curse of the long lever "Give me a lever long enough and a fulcrum on which to place it and I shall move the world." This famous quote comes from the Greek philosopher and engineer Archimedes. It describes the power of the lever: it just needs to be sufficiently long and its fixation strong enough for its power to exponentiate almost endlessly. This applies reversely as well: as soon as a system creates a lever, it has an escalating function as soon as force is applied. In case of the exhaust this is undesirable, though unavoidable: the long piping starts at the cylinder head, disappears in the underbody, making a bend and ends in a long, more or less straight pipe all the way to the tailpipe. The lever appears right at the sharp bend, the exhaust system necessarily makes. A change of direction is also a change of force – causing a twisting moment along the lever. Flexibility helps If the pipe would consist of one long uninterrupted rigid piece, it would break right at this point. The vibrations by the engine as well as the pendular movement of the hanging exhaust pipe constantly pull at this weak point. The only thing that helps is a flexible piece, separating two parts of the same system into two straight pieces without levering function. This is the task of the flex pipe. A technical challenge The buffer piece's flexibility is caused by a trick: the flex pipe is not a rigid piece of metal but consists of metal mesh. The flex pipe is principally made of stainless steel so that it can withstand the high temperatures and the chemical substances. This metal mesh piece is only a few centimetres long. Costs for this high-grade part are therefore within limits. Flex pipe defects Although the flex pipe is made of stainless steel, its life span is limited. Its delicate construction makes it susceptible to wear. As mesh threads rupture, the strain on the remaining threads rises. At a certain point, so many fabric threads are ruptured, causing exhaust gas to escape. This becomes apparent immediately: the flex pipe is located right before the front or end silencer. The engine sound can escape unfiltered through a leaking flex pipe and this is very loud even in the smallest cars. If the car suddenly produces a very loud engine sound, a defective flex pipe is very probably the cause. Replacing the flex pipe Fortunately, a flex pipe is one of the easiest exhaust elements to replace. For replacement, the car needs to be jacked up. With a screwdriver, the flex pipe clamps must be loosened and the defective component replaced by a new one. Pay special attention to the safety:
- - Jacking up a car should only be down with appropriate tools. A simple jack is NOT sufficient for works under the car. Ideal are professional car jacks.
- Allow the engine to cool down and under no circumstances let the engine run during the works. Apart from a burning risk, the danger of carbon monoxide poisoning exists.
