Makes your car quiet and safe The exhaust gasket is a small, yet important component that helps ensure safe emission of exhaust gases. It is the sealing connection between the engine and the exhaust. Where is the exhaust gasket located? Due to its location, the exhaust gasket is also referred to as the "manifold gasket", for it sits right on the engine block, between the outlet port and the manifold. The exhaust gasket's close proximity to the engine's combustion chamber makes its construction particularly challenging: It must create an absolutely tight seal, regardless of whether the engine is cold or hot, all while remaining as wear-resistant as possible. Furthermore, the assembly of the manifold significantly compresses it. Nonetheless, it must permanently remain fixed and sealed in spite of varying temperatures, vibrations and movements. Generally, exhaust gaskets stay intact for the duration of the car's life. However, if removed in the course of a manifold repair, it is a sensible measure to replace the exhaust gasket to ensure the vehicle's reliability. Exhaust gasket design Heat resistance is the main requirement of the gasket between the manifold and engine. Temperatures easily exceeding 1000° C occur in the engine's combustion chamber and are transmitted into the manifold via the exhaust gases. Although the gases cool down quite rapidly, the seal is almost directly exposed to these high temperatures due to its proximity to the combustion chamber. Therefore, exhaust seals consist of temperature-resistant, non-flammable material. Typically they are made of wire mesh consisting of high-strength, heat-resistant metal alloys. Flat gaskets made of copper are equally common, as are manifold seals consisting of pressed mineral wool. The latter material has the advantage that it can be manufactured very thinly. Consequently, mineral pressed fiber gaskets are the preferred choice for single-piece seals used in multi-cylinder engines. Wire mesh solutions, on the other hand, are more frequently used in motorcycles or multi-part exhaust gaskets. Exhaust gasket defects Increasingly louder engine noise points toward a defective exhaust gasket. Yet in most cases, this is merely indicative of a larger problem: A broken bolt or a cracked manifold are frequently the root cause in such cases. Hot exhausts escaping from a defective manifold gasket can cause engine fires or scorching of plastic parts. Thus you should immediately "prick up your ears" the second your engine suddenly sounds louder. Ideally, a crack or a leak is detected when the engine is cold. Metals expand when heated, wherefore an exhaust leak often seals itself at higher temperatures. Soot marks on the screw connections are another indication of damage to this component. Since a defective gasket permits accidental intake of air into the exhaust system, the oxygen sensor's measurements may also become wildly inaccurate. Thus, a significant increase in fuel consumption may also be indicative of a broken exhaust manifold gasket. Cost and repair of a manifold gasket The manifold gasket is a very inexpensive wear part. Prices vary depending on size and type, but rarely exceed 20 euros. In cases in which a manifold must be completely replaced, the seal is usually included in the set. Generally, replacement of a manifold gasket is quite simple: The manifold is detached at the retaining bolts, whereupon the seal simply falls out. The critical moment is the loosening and tightening of the manifold's screw connections. If these tear off, drilling and repairing the thread can be very costly. It is therefore recommended to always clean the threads in the engine block prior to reassembly and generally use new manifold screws. Also, the use of a correctly adjusted torque wrench is mandatory when installing the manifold. Only the prescribed torque, along with using new screws, guarantees the correct fit of the component. This ensures that the engine vibrations do not loosen the manifold, as well as prevents tearing off the screws during installation or operation. Please note that not all screws are suitable! Only screws prescribed by the vehicle manufacturer for this purpose may be used. Affordable and powerful component The manifold gasket is an affordable and easily replaceable spare part. Yet, it has a significant impact on the safety, the comfort and the efficiency of a vehicle. Thus, periodically checking for creeping damage is appropriate. This is recommended for vehicles 5 years or older and for a mileage of over 80,000 kilometers.
