Part of the car engine overhaul: the main bearing
The main bearing / connecting rod bearing is situated between the crankshaft and con rod. It guarantees the smooth and solid sliding fit of the con rod and correct combustion stroke. Nowadays, damage to the con rod bearing hardly ever occurs. With modern procedures the con rod bearing can be checked without the need for engine disassembly. Self-lubrication for maximum life span The engine life span has increased considerably in the last thirty years. In the old days, cars were ready for the scrap heap after 100.000 km. Nowadays, the threefold amount is standard. Even cheap compact cars cross the 200.000 km mark and keep much longer with the proper maintenance. A cause for the longer life span lies in the progress of bearing technology. Main bearings are made of sintered bronze, providing them with a solid surface and a cellular structure. The cellularity gives con rod bearings self-lubricating qualities. Even if the oil level is low, bearing shells are filled with oil like a sponge, providing emergency lubrication. One-piece for durability Laymen tend to associate bearings with ball or roller bearings. The power generated in an engine does not allow for small parts as they are used in these bearings. Flaking ball or roller bearings would damage the entire engine in a matter of seconds. Therefore, for camshaft bearings, crankshaft bearings and con rod bearings, so-called one-piece bearing shells are used. They consist of two U-form shells which are placed in the brackets. Their material enables their bearing and lubricating performance. Defects of the con rod bearing A defective con rod bearing can no longer correctly synchronise the working forces in the engine. The emerging pressure in the combustion room pushes with several thousand bar on the crankshaft, which due to contact with gearbox and drive wheels has to intercept a high counter-torque. This causes double strain for the con rod bearing. Therefore it is all the more amazing how long those simple parts hold. Yet, if defects occur, quick action is necessary. The strokes coming from the engine compartment would otherwise destroy the con rod bearings and the crankshaft, ultimately disabling the entire engine. A defective con rod bearing announces itself through ticking or knocking. In most cases it is already too late. It is better to perform a precautionary check on the main bearings after a certain mileage. Prevention through oil analysis A cheap and modern procedure for checking the main bearing is the oil analysis. On occasion of an oil change, a probe of the old oil is taken and sent to a laboratory. There it is checked for abrasion parts. This allows for conclusions on the general engine condition. A high amount of bronze abrasion, for example, would indicate a worn con rod bearing. Replacing a con rod bearing Replacement of a con rod bearing indeed is an "open-heart operation" for the engine. Generally, the con rod bearing is only replaced on occasion of a general engine overhaul. Simultaneously, piston rings and bearing shells of camshaft and crankshaft are replaced. If you only want to replace the con rod bearings, in normal overhead engines they can be reached by way of the oil pan. This is removed, after which in most cases the crankshaft with screwed-on connection rods is visible. They can easily be replaced, but special caution is necessary. Otherwise extensive engine damage is the consequence. Separate bearings are available at ca. 20 euro (£17). Replacement of the entire set is always recommended. The wear of all four main bearings occurs simultaneously and therefore separate replacement makes no sense. Obviously, main bearing replacement requires an oil change as well.
