The crankcase ventilation helps you stay in control of the pressure in the engine The crankcase ventilation refers to an entire assembly used to reduce the engine's internal pressure. It also serves to reduce oil consumption and prevent environmental damage. Insidious blow-by During normal engine operation, a phenomenon occurs that many users are usually unaware of. As is so often the case, the theoretical sequence of compression, explosion, work and emission is only possible in theory. In practice, the compression of the gas mixture in the pistons is unfortunately not nearly as flawless as one might think. In fact, up to 2% of the exhaust gases are lost with each one of the engine’s piston strokes. There are various reasons for this. The gases make their way past the piston rings and into the crankcase. This completely normal process is absolutely inevitable. If this pressure is not purged, however, it will continue to rise in the crankcase. This might eventually even lead to the crankcase bursting. Therefore, the crankcase ventilation assembly was developed to prevent this from happening. Components of the crankcase ventilation The crankcase ventilation generally consists of three components:

    - Hose line - Separator with housing - Equalizer valve
All in all, the crankcase ventilation is a closed system that serves to prevent leaks into the atmosphere. The pressure building up in the crankcase as a result of the blow-by effect consists of an exhaust gas and oil mixture. This is led into an oil separator via a riser, where the oils and gases are separated again. The exhaust gases are led back into the intake tract, while the oil flows back into the oil pan via a hose. This completes the circuit. Under ideal circumstances, any environmental contamination is reliably prevented. If, however, the pressure in the crankcase increases significantly, e.g. due to damaged piston rings, an equalizer valve prevents the crankcase from bursting. Most vehicles register a triggering of the equalizer valve and will provide a warning. Crankcase ventilation defects Generally, the crankcase ventilation consists of rubber and plastic. Both materials can become brittle and cracked over time. This is easily determined by a high loss of oil. In addition, the engine can experience heavy RPM fluctuations when idling. Another type of wear that occurs with the crankcase ventilation is internal blockage. This occurs when the oil change intervals have been neglected or an incorrect oil was used. The integrated separating device is installed in the oil filter separator. This is a wearing part that must be replaced regularly. If this is neglected, the crankcase ventilation may also malfunction. Repairing the case ventilation Although repairing a faulty or clogged crankcase ventilation is usually somewhat laborious, it is a relatively easy task. The only problem with the repair is the part's accessibility. It sits directly on the engine, but is usually covered by various other components, such as air ducts, oil filter or pollen filter. With enough patience, all of these components can easily be removed until the ventilation components are accessible.
One can of course try cleaning a clogged vent. Yet, since replacement parts by brand-name manufacturers such as VAICO, ATEC or FEBI BIELSTEIN only cost around 50 euro, a complete replacement is the quicker and more reliable measure. Additional sensible measures during the overhaul If the crankcase ventilation needs to be overhauled, performing a minor engine rebuild is a good idea. This includes changing the engine oil and oil filter. This is also a great opportunity to ensure that only oil recommended by the manufacturer is used. The air filter will surely also have taken damaged due to the damaged crankcase ventilation and should therefore also be replaced. It is particularly important to also check the entire intake tract. As a minimum, the intake manifold, EGR valve, intercooler and, if necessary, even the turbocharger need to be thoroughly cleaned after fixing a defective crankcase ventilation. Since air containing oil is quite aggressive on rubber, the suction hose can also be replaced to be completely safe. This effectively prevents the annoying phenomenon of drawing false air in the long term. However, if the ventilation equalizer valve was triggered, one should do detailed research to determine the exact cause. With a little luck, the problem was just a clogged hose line in the ventilation. However, defective piston rings are more likely to be the cause. This can reliably be determined with a compression test.
